[movies]DanStowell20070806_AdaptiveWhitening - Dan Stowell
We describe a new method for preprocessing STFT (Short-Time Fourier Transform) phase-vocoder frames for improved performance in real-time onset detection, which we term “adaptive whiteningâ€. The procedure involves normalising the magnitude of each bin according to a recent maximum value for that bin, with the aim of allowing each bin to achieve a similar dynamic range over time, which helps to mitigate against the influence of spectral roll-off and strongly-varying dynamics...

[movies]DanStowell20070702_TimbralRempping - Dan Stowell
We propose an approach to timbral remapping, a process which maps the timbre variations of one audio source onto the timbre variations of another, for real-time control of synthesis. Puckette (ICMC, 2004) has made a foray into such a concept, but there are two important issues which must be addressed: how best to construct the timbre space for remapping purposes; and how to perform this remapping eficiently in real-time...

[texts]lastfmarchive.bash - Dan Stowell
A bash script for unixy systems (such as Mac), to help archive your last.fm feed. Last.fm holds the copyright in the data feeds but they publish them under a creative commons licensing scheme, so there should be no problem in you archiving your own listening history. Or even other people's listening histories, which is a bit spooky. To install/use: make sure you have "curl" and "xmlstarlet" installed, then save this file (lastfmarchive.bash) somewhere useful...

[movies]iPodLinux Sine test 1 - Dan Stowell
Testing my iPodLinux program which uses a wavetable oscillator to produce sine waves. The point is to see what kind of complexity of synthesis an iPod is capable of. This can produce about 36 sine waves simultaneously. (This example is a module built on the "podzilla2" framework, so it's not just this demo that's loaded but the whole podzilla2 app. More may be possible with a pure executable rather than a pz2 module.)

The programmes feature interviews with some of the original "gods" of 8-bit music, as well as members of the...

The tutorial was given by Dan Stowell at the Centre for Digital Music (Queen Mary University of London) on 2009-01-15. The first half covers some of the basics, plus sound synthesis and sound processing. [texts]Making music through real-time voice timbre analysis: machine learning and timbral control - Dan Stowell
People can achieve rich musical expression through vocal sound – see for example human beatboxing, which achieves a wide timbral variety through a range of extended techniques. Yet the vocal modality is under-exploited as a controller for music systems. If we can analyse a vocal performance suitably in real time, then this information could be used to create voice-based interfaces with the potential for intuitive and fulfilling levels of expressive control...

Jan Trutzschler recently released his "TeaTracks" sequencer for SuperCollider. Here's a screencast of me trying it out for the first time, just demonstrating how you can visually arrange audio files and snippets of SuperCollider code, in a graphical environment that's kind of like a traditional time-based sequencer. (I forgot to show that you can do some other nice things like "freeze" the generative parts of the piece into audio files, or render the whole track out.)

[texts]Maximum a posteriori estimation of piecewise arcs in tempo time-series - Dan Stowell
In musical performances with expressive tempo modulation, the tempo variation can be modelled as a sequence of tempo arcs. Previous authors have used this idea to estimate series of piecewise arc segments from data. In this paper we describe a probabilistic model for a time-series process of this nature, and use this to perform inference of single- and multi-level arc processes from data. We describe an efficient Viterbi-like process for MAP inference of arcs...

[texts]Segregating event streams and noise with a Markov renewal process model - Dan Stowell
We describe an inference task in which a set of timestamped event observations must be clustered into an unknown number of temporal sequences with independent and varying rates of observations. Various existing approaches to multi-object tracking assume a fixed number of sources and/or a fixed observation rate; we develop an approach to inferring structure in timestamped data produced by a mixture of an unknown and varying number of similar Markov renewal processes, plus independent clutter nois...

[texts]Improved multiple birdsong tracking with distribution derivative method and Markov renewal process clustering - Dan Stowell
Segregating an audio mixture containing multiple simultaneous bird sounds is a challenging task. However, birdsong often contains rapid pitch modulations, and these modulations carry information which may be of use in automatic recognition. In this paper we demonstrate that an improved spectrogram representation, based on the distribution derivative method, leads to improved performance of a segregation algorithm which uses a Markov renewal process model to track vocalisation patterns consisting...
